Out-of-contract Benni McCarthy hints at Kaizer Chiefs ambitions

As his Manchester United contract nears its end, former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has dropped a hint about his Kaizer Chiefs ambitions.

Amakhosi are expected to finalise their search for a permanent coach in the coming weeks following the conclusion of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership.

Chiefs have been without a permanent coach after sacking Molefi Ntseki in October 2023 after failing to steer the team to positive results. Ntseki took over the hot seat at Chiefs at the start of the just-ended campaign.

Cavin Johnson, who initially joined Chiefs as the Head of Academy, took over the coaching role on an interim basis. However, he failed to turn the fortunes at the club after finishing 10th on the log standings.

The Naturena-based side won nine games in the league, drawing nine while losing on 12 occasions in 30 matches. The disappointing season has prompted the Chiefs hierarchy to search for a new coach for the next season.

WHAT DID BENNI MCCARTHY SAY ABOUT COACHING CHIEFS?

With a handful of names thrown around as candidates for the job, Benni McCarthy says he will take the opportunity to lead Chiefs.

McCarthy is familiar with the DStv Premiership football after coaching Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC where he won the Coach of the Season award after guiding Usuthu to a second-place finish in the 2020/21 campaign.

“Not many coaches in the world say no to institutions, Man United is an institution, Real Madrid is an institution, Bayern Munich is an institution. Vincent Kompany has joined Bayern Munich, he has gone to join an institution,” McCarthy said on MSW when asked if he would be keen to join Chiefs.

“I think we can safely say that Kaizer Chiefs is an institution, listen, it’s a great club that I always had a lot of love for. My local team, the team that I supported as a kid is the Black and Gold of Kaizer Chiefs. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure to play for them or to coach them.

“If the opportunity comes or anything, of course, I’ll have to sit down and think about it because like I said, you don’t say no to institutions.”
