Teboho Mokoena gets green light from Broos to make overseas move
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has granted Teboho Mokoena the green light to sign for an overseas team in the upcoming transfer window.
The Belgian mentor reckons that the talented midfielder is ready to play in one of the highest leagues in the world, given his stellar performance at the 2023 AFCON tournament and in the DStv Premiership.
Mokoena’s impressive displays in the South African elite league have earned him a nomination for the PSL Footballer of the Season, an award that he won last campaign. The 27-year-old footballer is nominated alongside his teammate Ronwen Williams and Stellenbosch FC’s Iqraam Rayners.
According to reports, Mamelodi Sundowns and Mokoena are currently in negotiations for a new deal, but both parties have yet to reach an agreement.
Mokoena is part of Broos’ final Bafana squad set to take on Nigeria and Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month.
HUGO BROOS APPROVES TEBOHO MOKOENA FOR OVERSEAS MOVE
The 72-year-old coach has approved Mokoena for an overseas move, given his qualities over the years.
He went on to state that it is not only Mokoena who’s ready to move abroad, as he singled out the brilliance of Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau.
“Maybe in Sundowns, they will not be happy now, but I hope Mokwena can make the steps because he’s ready for it,” said Broos after the Bafana squad announcement.
“Sometimes I say, what’s this one going to do in Europe? But Teboho is ready to do it. And maybe some other players also.
“After AFCON, Khuliso is also ready to do it. It should be good for Bafana Bafana players to play in competitions that are high-level than the PSL.”
‘THEY WILL BECOME BETTER PLAYERS’
Broos further emphasised that if more Bafana players move overseas, they will become top-class players and yield fruitful results for the national team.
“They will become better players, and you will see in other countries, they take the opponents of next week where they are playing, Italy, France, England and all the big competitions. And you see what kind of players they are,” he added.
“So, let’s hope that the AFCON results may bring more interest from South African players so that they can make the step overseas.”
