PSL issue update on challenge to interdict promotion playoffs

PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu has provided an update on a high court challenge from a team in the second-tier league seeking to interdict the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs.

Upington City FC approached the High Court in Johannesburg on Saturday after the SAFA arbitration dismissed their case against the PSL Disciplinary Committee on Friday.

WHERE THE MATTER BETWEEN UPINGTON CITY AND MILFORD FC COMES FROM

In April this year, Upington lodged a protest against Motsepe Foundation Championship side Milford FC. This is for allegedly not complying with the PSL Under-23 rule.

Upington allege that Milford did not play with a minimum of two U-23 players during the league match which Milford won 3-0. They were hoping that a decision in their favour could have meant they climbed to third position on the log and subsequently qualify for the playoffs to fight for a spot in the DStv Premiership.

Milford could have also been affected in their fight for survival if the three points were to be deducted. But the KwaZulu-Natal side has always maintained its innocence.

During a PSL DC hearing last month, the League dismissed the protest by Upington. The matter escalated to the SAFA arbitration, which ruled in favour of the PSL DC. But Upington took the matter to the High Court with the intention to interdict the playoffs which start on Sunday, 02 June. But they also lost.

MOTSEPE FOUNDATION CHAMPIONSHIP SIDE STOPPED IN THEIR TRACKS TO INTERDICT THE PSL PROMOTION PLAYOFFS

“I can confirm that a short while ago, the high court in Johannesburg dismissed an urgent application to interdict the playoffs scheduled to commence tomorrow [Sunday],” said Majavu on Saturday night

“Such an application was brought by Upington FC, having lost an arbitration yesterday [Friday] evening. According to Upington, they wanted the playoffs to be interdicted. Pending a review of their challenge against the arbitration award in terms of which their protest was dismissed.

“I can now confirm that the playoffs will proceed without a glitch after their application was dismissed with costs. There will be no further commentary on the matter. Unless there are any other subsequent developments arriving from any other subsequent matters. The Upington chapter has now been closed,” he said.

The PSL Promotional Playoffs will kick off with a match between two NFD teams, AmaTuks and Baroka FC, this afternoon at 15:00 at the Tuks Stadium.
