Orlando Pirates part ways with striker Souaibou Marou

Orlando Pirates have officially announced the departure of the towering Cameroonian forward Souaibou Marou from the club.

Marou is the second departure confirmed by Pirates ahead of the 2024/25 PSL season. A few hours ago, they announced that assistant coach Sergio Almenara will be leaving the club by mutual consent.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm the departure of striker Souaibou Marou,” said the 2024 Nedbank Cup champions in a brief statement on Monday.

The Cameroonian international joined Pirates during the 2023 January transfer window from Coton Sport, but he struggled to get regular game time. He arrived at the Soweto giants with high expectations after making it to the 2022 Qatar World Cup with the Cameron national team.

During his stint at Pirates, the 23-year-old forward played only nine matches in all competitions and did not score a goal.

“The Cameroonian, who joined us at the beginning of the season, is free to join a club of his choice. We would like to wish Souiabou all the best in his future endeavours.” Pirates added in a statement.

Marou faced tough competition in the striking department at Pirates, with Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa preferred in the position.

Mabasa finished the season as the DStv Premiership top goal scorer with 16 goals, while Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners is behind him with 15 strikes.

Pirates also have Kermit Erasmus and Zakhele Lepasa, who are still fighting to break into Jose Riveiro’s starting line-up.

Meanwhile, the Soweto giants wrapped the 2023/24 campaign in style after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final At Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

This was Pirates’ second domestic trophy, following their win of the MTN8 title earlier in the season against the same opponents.
