Zambian keeper set for a return to South Africa
Zambian international goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe is set to return to South Africa after spending two seasons in his home country’s Premier League.
Chibwe, who chose to play for Chipolopolo over Bafana Bafana, has been in the books of Zambia Super League side Zesco United since 2022.
The moves come after he mutually agreed to part ways with Baroka FC. The former Polokwane City FC number opted to play in Zambia, where his father was born.
In 2019, Chibwe famously turned down an opportunity to play for South Africa after then-coach Molefi Ntseki called him up for the Nelson Mandela Challenge match against Mali.

He says the decision came as he wanted to honour his late father by playing for Zambia.
‘It wasn’t really saying no, Bafana. It’s a matter of my dad used to play that side, so he didn’t really manage to play for the national team. I also thought I needed to fulfil his dream and make it my dream,” he explained at the time.

Chibwe was born in Rustenburg to Zambian parents. The former Jomo Cosmos goalkeeper also made his Chipolopolo debut in 2019. He has since been capped ten times by Zambia.
