Denis Onyango attracts interest from PSL rivals

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has attracted interest from PSL rivals following the conclusion of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Onyango was on the bench when Masandawana suffered a 2-1 defeat against Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final at a packed Mbombela Stadium this past Saturday.

The veteran goalie’s current contract with Sundowns is set to expire on June 30, and discussions regarding a new contract have not yet taken place.

Since the arrival of Ronwen Williams at Chloorkop in 2022, Onyango has been the second-choice keeper. In the just-ended season, he only managed to play nine games across all competitions.

Williams signed for Sundowns from the cross-town rivals SuperSport United in July 2022 on a long-term contract. The Bafana Bafana shot-stopper has 84 games under his belt in his two seasons at Downs.

WHICH TEAM IS INTERESTED IN SIGNING DENIS ONYANGO?

With Onyango’s contract set to expire in a few weeks, SuperSport United is reportedly monitoring the star closely, as per FARPost.

Matsatsantsa are searching for a goalkeeper to replace Ricardo Goss. The latter will return to his parent club, Sundowns, upon the expiry of his loan deal.

SuperSport will be left with Washington Arubi and the inexperienced Samukelo Xulu in the goalkeeping department. A source privy to the information says the Tshwane side has identified Onyango as the best candidate to fill the void left by Goss.

“SuperSport United have widened their search for a new goalkeeper. Because they know that Ricardo Goss is going back to Sundowns,” a source said.

The source added: “They are looking at Denis Onyango from Mamelodi Sundowns. SuperSport want him to come and guide the youthful squad at the club. He’s a very gifted player with his performances and leadership qualities.”

Interestingly, the 38-year-old goal-minder was in the books of SuperSport between 2006 and 2010 when the team won three league titles in a row.
