Makhehlene Makhaula issues an update on his Pirates future

Orlando Pirates experienced midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has issued an update on his future with the Soweto giants.

Makhaula made the switch to Pirates in the middle of the 2022/23 season from KZN side AmaZulu FC, signing a one-and-a-half-year deal. As a result, his current contract with the Sea Robbers expires on June 30th.

‘Cash’ has been part of the team’s success since joining Pirates, bossing the midfield. So far in Pirates colours, the 34-year-old has made 29 appearances in all competitions and found the back of the net once.

In addition, since linking up with the Bucs, the team has been dominant in the domestic cup competitions, winning two MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies in the last two seasons.

Makhaula has ended speculation surrounding his future at Pirates. In January 2024, reports emerged that he may leave the club when his contract expires.

At first, Makhaula struggled for game time, but when he got his chance, he grabbed it with both hands and started being a regular player in the starting 11. In the second half of the season, the former AmaZulu skipper made 14 appearances out of a possible 19.

In an interview with MSW, the Pirates star confirmed that he’s staying at the club for another season following a one-year contract extension.

Therefore, his deal will expire at the end of the 2024/25 season. Following these developments, the club is expected to make an announcement soon.

“I’m carrying on with the team, signed for another season. I’m happy at Pirates,” said Makhaula.

Pirates have already parted ways with one player, Cameroonian striker Souaibou Marou. Other players who face uncertain futures at the club include striker Kermit Erasmus, Bafana Bafana international Thabang Monare and Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori.
