Mike Makaab on Pirates star’s future: ‘The deal is going to happen’
Top football agent Mike Makaab has commented on the future of an Orlando Pirates star following the departure of two players at the club ahead of the 2024/25 PSL season.
The 2023/24 season concluded last Saturday. As usual, players’ contracts will expire at some clubs, while others will be extended in preparation for the upcoming season.
With that said, Pirates released two players in the last two days, becoming the first team to act in terms of player personnel. They announced they have parted ways with Fortune Makaringe and Souaibou Marou.
In addition, the Soweto giants confirmed that assistant coach Sergio Almenara has left the club by mutual consent.
And with more players likely to be shown the exit door, Makaab of Prospect International has given an update on Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha’s future.
WHICH DEAL IS MIKE MAKAAB IS REFERRING TO?
In an interview with FARPost, agent Makaab confirmed that the permanent transfer of Thalente Mbatha to Pirates is imminent. Currently on loan from SuperSport United, the 24-year-old midfielder is set to make a permanent switch.
Makaab expressed confidence that the transfer will be completed smoothly, without any complications.
Mbatha joined the Sea Robbers in the 2024 January transfer window on a short-term deal till the end of the season. Bucs have an option to make the move permanent.
“At the moment, they [Orlando Pirates] are busy talking with SuperSport United to finalise the deal and make it permanent,” said Makaab. “But the deal is going to happen.
“It was already pre-agreed in the original agreement. Orlando Pirates had a loan with an option to make it permanent.”
The former Highlands Park FC player impressed during his loan spell and became a key player for the Soweto giants. He made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and grabbing two assists.
Mbatha’s efforts on the pitch helped the Happy People finish second on the DStv Premiership table. Also, Pirates successfully defended their Nedbank Cup trophy against Mamelodi Sundowns. In the final, Mbatha was named the Man of the Match for his great performance.
