Orlando Pirates confirm second departure

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of a second player from their squad following the conclusion of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

The Buccaneers are fresh from winning the 2024 Nedbank Cup final after defeating DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates made the decision to release Cameroonian striker Souaibou Marou on Monday as he had a challenging time securing playing time.

Marou, the first player to leave Pirates ahead of the new season, only made nine appearances following his arrival in January 2023 from Coton Sport. Despite his efforts, he was unable to score any goals during his tenure at the club.

Following Marou out the exit door at Pirates is Fortune Makaringe, the club announced on Tuesday. And the Soweto giants are expected to make more changes to their squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

Makaringe spent five years at Orlando Pirates after signing from Maritzburg United ahead of the 2019/20 season. In his time at Pirates, he made 147 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals while making nine assists.

The skillfil midfielder fell out of favour at the Soweto giants since the arrival of the head coach Jose Riveiro two seasons ago. Makaringe faced the tough competition from players such as Thabang Monare, Miguel Timm, Makhehlene Makhaula and Thalenthe Mbatha in the central-midfield position.

Makaringe only managed to play 14 matches last season across all competions and scored one goal while provding one assist.

Meanwhile, in a shocking move on Monday, Pirates announced the exit of assistant coach Sergio Almenara who is returning to Spain.

Almenara joined the Soweto giants alongside Riveiro during the 2022/23 season and he went on to win four trophies with the club. He won two MTN8 and Nedbank Cup trophies.
