As others are adamant that the quality of Zimbabwean players has lost valor, ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender Teenage Hadebe has different thoughts on the matter.
Only seven Zimbabwean players have retained their places in the DStv Premiership, as the number slowly sinks into oblivion.
Khama Billiat and Evans Rusike were the latest Zimbabweans to lose their respective places in the DStv Premiership. Billiat could not retain his place at Kaizer Chiefs, with a failed attempt to join SuperSport United.Â
On the other hand, Rusike was offloaded by Moroka Swallows and could not find a new home in South Africa. Both, Billiat and Rusike surfaced at Yadah FC in Zimbabwe’s PSL.
They are yet to make significant impact at the club but their return to the Zimbabwean league was a subject of debate for weeks.
HADEBE’S SENTIMENTS ON THE REDUCING NUMBER OF ZIMBABWEANS IN THE DStv PREMIERSHIP
Contrary to what has often been said, ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender still believes Zimbabwe produces refined players in the Southern region.
The 28-year-old is of the view that poor marketing has been the main drawback for budding Zimbabwean footballers.
“I think, the problem now is the marketing. Remember last time when I was playing in Zimbabwe, there was SuperSport TV,” Hadebe told FARPost.
“Right now, there is no SuperSport TV. It’s hard to come to South Africa without being seen. If they don’t send scouts, then you won’t make it.
“I believe that in our country that there is excellent talent. Kaizer Chiefs was dominated by Zimbabweans but now, there are few guys remaining in the PSL. I hope it will change as times goes.”
Meanwhile Hadebe is set to be unveiled by a Major League Soccer [MLS] club after leaving Turkey side Tümosan Konyaspor. The club’s name is yet to be revealed.
Earlier this year, he signed a short term deal with Tümosan Konyaspor. The contract lapsed at the end of the 2023/24 season. He will return to MLS where he made 56 appearances in his stint at Houston Dynamo.
