Four more players exit Orlando Pirates

The revolving door at Orlando Pirates continued to spin on Friday as the Soweto giants confirmed the departure of four more players.

This significant exodus comes hot on the heels of the recent exits of striker Souaibou Marou and midfielder Fortune Makaringe, with reports swirling that more established names could be shown the exit door as well.

The shake-up also hints at a major squad overhaul for head coach Jose Riveiro. The latter’s right-hand man, his first assistant coach Sergio Almenara, also departed the club by mutual consent just days after Pirates secured their Nedbank Cup title defence.

In a statement, the club said: “As the football season draws to a close, we not only mark the end of our campaign but also bid farewell to some of our esteemed players.

Orlando Pirates Exodus Continues

“Orlando Pirates can confirm that Richard Ofori, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Thabang Monare and Kermit Erasmus will be leaving us when their respective contracts come to an end on June 30.

“It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we reflect on the contributions of these players during their time with us.”

Ofori, who joined the Buccaneers in 2020 from Maritzburg United, “quickly became a cornerstone” of the club’s defence. His commanding presence anchored the backline for 58 appearances; the Ghanaian goalie registered 29 clean sheets while conceding 36 goals.

“Yet, his influence extended beyond the pitch. Richard was a unifying force within the squad, and his four years here have left us with countless positive memories,” said Pirates.

Pirates also said goodbye to Mpontshane, who spent nine seasons at the club. The 38-year-old former Platinum Stars goalie featured in over 85 matches for Bucs, conceding 75 goals while keeping 34 clean sheets. “His tenure has been marked by exceptional discipline and dedication, making him one of our most respected and appreciated members of the team.”

On the other hand, Monare leaves Pirates after four successful years with the club he joined from Bidvest Wits. He made 93 appearances for the Soweto giants, with only a single goal and two assists to his name.

“From the day he stepped foot in the club, the 34-year-old gave it his all. Desh has been the embodiment of hard work and resilience…Monare leaves the club with 2 Nedbank trophies, 2 MTN8 Cups and a silver medal for the CAF Confederation Cup.”

Meanwhile, Erasmus’ second stint with Pirates has come to an end. The striker, who returned to the club in 2022 from Mamelodi Sundowns after nine years, departs with a bittersweet ‘legend’ status.

“…[he] made an immediate impact by helping us clinch the MTN8 title. With over 117 matches under his belt in Pirates colours, Romeo has solidified his legendary status at the club,” declared Bucs, as the striker scored 26 goals and provided 19 assists.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to these players for their unwavering service and commitment to the club. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”
