Gavin Hunt responds to SuperSport United exit talks
SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has responded to the swirling speculation about his future at the club.
With Hunt’s contract at SuperSport expiring on 30 June, rumours of a potential exit have been rife, fueled further by reports linking the veteran coach with a move to Sekhukhune United in recent weeks.
Speaking to the media on Friday on the sidelines of the closing ceremony for the CAF A Diploma Coaching Course at SAFA House, Hunt did not explicitly address the Sekhukhune interest but offered a hint that could suggest a potential stay at Matsatsantsa.
GAVIN Hunt Addresses Future at SuperSport United
Hunt chuckled as he addressed a question about the Sekhukhune head coach position. “So, that is the only reason [I’m linked to them] because I have a CAF A Coaching License? he quipped.
This lighthearted response did little to dispel the rumours, but it hinted at Hunt’s comfort level in considering a challenge on the continental stage. It’s worth noting that Sekhukhune will be competing in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, making the CAF A licence license a relevant factor.
Hunt, who stated that the course, which began in November, consumed a significant portion of his time, added: “Look, there have been a lot of things. When you come here [SAFA coaching course], you get tucked away a little bit from reality.
“So we [himself and his agent] will get back on what’s going on this afternoon, and there isn’t much going on at the moment,” added Hunt, who is one of the 25 coaches who graduated with a CAF A Diploma Coaching Course and was honoured by SAFA for the achievement.
Furthermore, Hunt openly expressed his ambition to participate in the inter-club CAF competition with Matsatsantsa. Additionally, he offered a glimpse into the club’s plans for the upcoming 2024/25 season, suggesting a level of involvement that goes beyond a coach nearing the end of his contract.
‘I WANT TO PLAY CONTINENTAL FOOTBALL WITH SUPERSPORT’: HUNT
“I want to get into CAF at SuperSport, where I am. We missed it [qualification] this year by one point, which was very frustrating, but it is what it is,” he uttered.
Shedding light on the potential player shake-up at SuperSport, Hunt stated: “You cannot keep young players, especially if they are not going to play.
“So we are going to have to loan a few out so they get experience, that’s certainly on the agenda, and a few players came to the end of their contracts, which really be known now; I haven’t had the time, but I will get with the CEO [Stanley Matthews] and chat about it, and there is a few things that we need to look at.”
