Barker on how Bafana selection could impact Adams and Rayners’ transfers

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has explained how Bafana Bafana selection could impact Jayden Adams and Iqraam Rayners’ transfers during the PSL transfer window.

Adams and Rayners, who have been linked with moves away from the Cape Town side, are in camp with Bafana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The duo have been in scintillating form for the Cape Winelands side, consistently putting in strong performances across all competitions.

In the just-ended season, Adams made 35 appearances for Stellies in all competitions, scored three goals, and provided eight assists. On the other hand, Rayners played 39 matches, hit the back of the net 17 times, and grabbed eight assists as well.

Adams has been linked with the DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Whereas, there are rumours that Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns are interested in Rayners.

STEVE BARKER ON JAYDEN ADAMS AND IQRAAM RAYNERS’ TRANSFERS

The 56-year-old believes Bafana’s selection will increase Adams and Rayners’ market value, making it difficult for clubs to purchase the two stars.

“Football is football; it happens in the world with players coming in and going. But I believe that as a club, it’s a different situation than maybe it was two years back in terms of our competitiveness,” said Barker.

“We have won a trophy, now participating in Africa, so players want to be at clubs that are successful. So I believe we’ve got into that space where we’re in Africa. In terms of that, it does make it more difficult for clubs. I think the value of players has increased tremendously.

“Having achieved that, selected for Bafana Bafana, in a market value point of view, I don’t think it’s going to be easy for clubs to just come in for them.

However, the mentor didn’t rule out the possibility of the duo leaving the club during the current transfer window.

“But I don’t want to predict and say it will happen or it will not happen. We want to keep our squad; we want to keep the players that we have. Actually, we want to add more depth so we can remain more competitive. We’ll see what happens.”
