Cape Town Spurs make surprise U-turn on Middendorp

Relegated DStv Premiership side Cape Town Spurs have made a surprise U-turn on coach Ernst Middendorp days after confirming his departure.

On 3 June, CT Spurs announced that the German’s tenure at the club came to an end after failing to help them survive relegation from the SA elite league.

He was recently linked with a job at Sekhukhune United, who placed head coach Lehlohonolo Seema on special leave.

Besides their relegation, CT Spurs have also also been rumoured to be interested in buying the premiership status of Moroka Swallows.

In a statement on their media platforms on Monday, the club announced that coach Middendorp will be returning.

“Cape Town Spurs are pleased to announce that coach Middendorp will be returning to the “Impossible Mission” he once labelled the experience to be after he took over the team in November with only 3 points on the board,” said the club.

“This turn of events signifies that both club and coach are fully invested in the vision that Cape Town Spurs set for itself after the withdrawal of Ajax Amsterdam in October 2020.”

WHY THE GERMAN MENTOR DECIDED TO RETURN TO THE URBAN WARRIORS

The former Kaizer Chiefs mentor revealed that he received a call on Sunday where it was agreed that he should continue with the project.

”I bought into the vision of the club from day one. The picture that the board put in front of me really excited me. We had started implementing the plans with the intention of building on this in the new season,” he explained.

”Unfortunately, we were a couple of points short at the end and were relegated. The challenge of the project, however, remained in my mind even though the club and I decided to part ways. When I returned to Cape Town yesterday, I received a call from the directors to meet up for breakfast.

“We were able to carve a way through the obstacles that were originally there. I am also happy to say that we can now continue from where we left off and deliver. Together with the board, the club that we all envisage to one day attaining its rightful place in SA football.”
