Hugo Broos explains Percy Tau match-day decision

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained his match-day decision on Percy Tau in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

Prior to the match, Tau participated in the pre-game warm-up alongside his teammates but subsequently retreated to the players’ lounge. The Al Ahly forward had also been named on the bench for Broos’s charges.

Bafana Bafana dazzled in a five-star performance, dominating the Warriors with a 3-1 victory in a thrilling match at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. Iqraam Rayners found the net within the first 35 seconds, but the Warriors responded with a quick equaliser a minute later. Thapelo Morena’s second-half brace secured the victory, earning South Africa three crucial points.

HUGO BROOS EXPLAINS WHY PERCY TAU HAD TO RETREAT TO THE PLAYERS’ LOUNGE

Broos explained why the Al Ahly attacker had to leave the bench. “Percy is injured. He was injured after the Nigeria game,” Broos told journalists. “We thought he would be ready today, but the treatment he’s received in the last three days hasn’t helped so much.

“We went to the hospital, and they did a scan. He has a muscular injury, and he couldn’t play.” The Belgian coach believes Tau’s willingness to warm up with the team demonstrates the selfless camaraderie and team spirit within this group of Bafana stars.

“Again, that shows he wanted to be on the bench. It shows how this group is. He supported the guys on the pitch. He’s even happy than anyone else.”

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star made way for Oswin Appollis, who delivered a standout performance against the Warriors. Broos has consistently defended Tau, arguing that critics have unfairly targeted the player. The Belgian mentor has emphasised Tau’s importance to the team and his potential to rediscover his best form.

Meanwhile, Bafana’s win saw them move from fourth place to second place behind Rwanda. In another Group C encounter, Amavubi Stars emerged 1-0 victors over Lesotho. They currently top the group courtesy of a superior goal difference. Like Bafana, the East Africans have collected seven points.
