Mpho Makola provides fascinating update on his future

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder Mpho Makola has provided a fascinating update on his future.

Makola has been a free agent for the entire 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign after parting ways with Polokwane City FC in June 2023.

The exit came as a big surprise after Makola helped PLK City FC gain automatic promotion to the SA’s top-flight at the start of last season.

‘Bibo’ spent six months with Polokwane City FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He featured in eight appearances, and his experience was crucial in sealing the promotion for the Limpopo-based side.

Before signing for PLK City, Makola was in the colours of Cape Town City FC for four seasons, making 94 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals. His best stint was with Pirates, where he played 178 games, scoring 21 goals while providing 28 assists.

Makola confirmed that he has no intentions of continuing to play football and will focus on getting his coaching badges.

Despite revealing his aim to complete a coaching license, the 38-year-old midfielder says he would like to be a technical director and not a coach.

“Now I’m just planning to get my badges, not that I want to be a coach one day, maybe just to take up a technical director role,” Makola told FARPost when asked about his future.

“For now, I’m going to continue coaching the young boys [in the amateur leagues]. I’m done playing, I’m not tired, my body is still fit because I train with these players. But I’m also going to be busy with my podcast with Kermit Erasmus. I’m also having my tournament in Tafelkop [Limpopo] in December.

“The MTN Foundation tournament is coming back this year because we haven’t been doing the tournament for the last three years because of COVID-19. So I’m just going to be around, sharing my experiences with the kids.”
