Sundowns stars dominate top list of PSL’s most valuable players

Mamelodi Sundowns stars continue to punch above their weight in the DStv Premiership, dominating the top ten list of the Most Valuable Players in the SA elite league.

According to Transfermarkt, no Kaizer Chiefs player made the cut into the top ten of the league’s Most Valuable Players. Only one Orlando Pirates star made it to the list, which is dominated by seven Mamelodi Sundowns stars.

Bafana Bafana star Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende are the joint-most valuable players, worth R48 million [€2.4 million]. Mokoena has been a vital cog for The Tshwane giants who accounted for their seventh DStv Premiership title on the trot.

In the just-ended season, the 27-year-old made 37 appearances in all competitions, where he contributed five goals and three assists. On the other hand, Allende made 44 appearances across all competitions. In addition, he scored four goals and provided six assists.

SUNDOWNS’ SHALULILE REMAINS HIGHLY-RATED DESPITE A LOWLY SEASON

Argentine forward Matias Esquivel and Peter Shalulile are third and forth on the list. The two are valued at R40 million [€2.0 million].

Moreover, Shalulile was not at his best in terms of goal return during the 2023/24 season. However, he remains highly valued. The 30-year-old Namibian striker scored 15 goals in all competitions where he featured 39 times. And then he managed to provide four assists.

Stellenbosch FC’s Iqraam Rayners, Sundowns duo of Lucas Ribeiro and Tashreeq Matthews follow on the list. According to Transfermarkt, their value is pegged at R36 million [€1.8 million].

Rayners was a shining star in Stellenbosch’s impressive season. He narrowly missed on the Golden Boot by one goal after scoring 15 goals. Orlando Pirates’ Tshegofatso Mabasa was the eventual winner after notching 16 goals throughout the season.

Ribeiro, on the other hand, had an impressive debut season for Masandawana. The Brazillian was arguably their best player and newcomer of the season after banging 12 goals in the league. In addition, another Sundowns star Aubrey Modiba is valued at R32 million [€ 1.6 million].

Lastly, Pirates’ midfield sensation Patrick Maswanganyi and Cape Town City FC’s Khanyisa Mayo complete the list as they are valued at R28 million [€1.4 million].
