Mike Makaab sets record straight on Makaringe’s future amid CT City interest

Prosport International CEO Mike Makaab has set the record straight on Fortune Makaringe’s future amid interest from Cape Town City FC.

The talented midfielder was one of the few players who parted ways with Pirates at the end of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season after struggling for game time.

In the just-ended season, Makaringe featured in 14 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

The midfield maestro spent five seasons with the Ghosts, having joined the club from Maritzburg United in 2019. Makaringe amassed 147 matches during his time at Pirates, scoring 10 goals while chipping in with nine assists.

His struggles to break into the starting line-up began two seasons ago when Pirates appointed Jose Riveiro as their head coach. The Spanish tactician has preferred Miguel Timm, Makhehlene Makhaula, Thalente Mbatha, and Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo in the central-midfielder position.

In fact, in several games last season, Makaringe played out of position at right-back due to injuries to Bandile Shandu and Thabiso Monyane.

The combinations have seemingly paid off as the Soweto giants won the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup in the previous campaign. They also finished as runners-up in the Premiership to qualify for the CAF Champions League, while Mamelodi Sundowns won their seventh successive league title.

WHAT DID MIKE MAKAAB SAY ABOUT FORTUNE MAKARINGE’S REPORTED MOVE TO CAPE TOWN CITY?

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Makaringe has signed with Cape Town City for the 2024/25 season. However, his representative, Mike Makaab, says the deal is not yet concluded, and talks are still ongoing with the Citizens.

“The deal [between Fortune Makaringe and Cape Town City] is not yet concluded. We are still in the process of negotiations.” Makaab told FARPost.

In addition, the Buccaneers have also released Kermit Erasmus, Souaibou Marou, Richard Ofori, Thabang Monare, and Siyabonga Mpontshane.
