Michael Morton names ex-Kaizer Chiefs duo as the best he’s worked with

PSL veteran midfielder Michael Morton has named the ex-Kaizer Chiefs duo as the best he’s worked with in his professional career.

The well-travelled midfielder has played for top teams in the SA elite league, including Orlando Pirates, now-defunct Bidvest Wits, AmaZulu FC, SuperSport United, and Maritzburg United. He also had a stint with now-defunct All Stars FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The 35-year-old is currently at Cape Town Spurs, who were relegated from the DStv Premiership in the just-ended campaign.

But Morton’s future with the Cape Town outfit is unclear as his contract with the Urban Warriors comes to an end on June 30th.

Previously, Morton has made it clear that, at this point in time, hanging his boots hasn’t crossed his mind yet.

The experienced midfielder says he enjoyed playing his football under coach Stuart Baxter and retired midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

The trio worked together at Tshwane side SuperSport United from January 2016 until June 2017. During their time with Matsatsantsa, Morton, Baxter, and Letsholonyane helped the club to win the 2016/17 Nedbank Cup.

“I think my most successful club was probably under Stuart Baxter at SuperSport United,” Morton told FARPost. “I think it was the system that we had at that time; it suited my style of play in terms of position.

“In many games, I played as a number eight [box-to-box midfielder] as opposed to number six [defensive midfielder].

“I played with ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane; he will occupy that number six role, and I had a free role. My physical capabilities and my running abilities are something in my game that nobody else has really seen. We were very successful during that period, and I enjoyed my stay.”
