Richards Bay edges close to maintaining DStv Premiership status

Richards Bay FC have edged closer to maintaining their DStv Premiership status after playing out to a 1-1 draw against the University of Pretoria in the PSL Promotional/Relegation playoffs on Saturday.

AmaTuks welcomed Richards Bay at the Tuks Stadium aiming to return to winning ways after playing to a 1-1 draw against Baroka FC midweek.

The Tshwane-based side has won one match in the playoffs after defeating Baroka in the PSL playoffs opening clash.

Before drawing against Bakgakga, Tuks lost 1-0 against Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium over a week ago. The Natal Rich Boys remains the only team in the playoffs that is yet to suffer a defeat after registering two draws and one victory.

Bay and Tuks came into this level on four points, with the KZN-based side sitting on the summit of the mini-table with a superior goal difference.

AmaTuks started the game positively, with all the goal-scoring opportunities going their way. Despite creating more goal-scoring chances in the first 30 minutes of the match, the Tlisane Motaung-coached team could not find the back of the net.

Richards Bay created their first chance in the 39th minute, which resulted in a goal courtesy of Yanela Mbuthuma. The referee blew the half-time whistle with Richards Bay leading 1-0. In the second-half, Tuks found an early goal through Kamogelo Pheeane in the 49th minute to bring the scoreline to 1-1.

While the University of Pretoria tried to fight for a winning goal in the second-half, the match ended in a draw, leaving Richards Bay with an advantage going into the last match.

AmaTuks will be hoping that Richards Bay loses their last match of the playoffs against Baroka with more than three goals to gain promotion to the SA’s top-flight.
