Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma has offered some insightful advice to the club’s young players, hoping to guide them towards successful careers.
Over the past seasons, Chiefs have promoted some young players to the senior team after they impressed in the development league and in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC].
In their ranks, the Soweto giants have talented starlets like Mfundo Vilakazi, Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, Samkelo Zwane, Donay Jansen, Bontle Molefe, and Aden McCarthy playing for the first team.
While most of Amakhosi’s young talents saw DStv Premiership action this past season, McCarthy and Molefe remain on the cusp of their senior debuts.
COLLINS MBESUMA’S MESSAGE TO KAIZER CHIEFS YOUNG TALENT
Chiefs legend and former Zambian striker has advised the club’s youngsters to remain grounded and not to focus too much on social media, as everyone has different views and opinions.
Mbesuma further emphasized that social media has ended the careers of many footballers because of overhyping.
“For me, what I can say to [Kaizer Chiefs] young players is that the most important thing is don’t focus too much on social media,” Mbesuma told FARPost. “On social media, everybody is talking, so I would advise a young player on how he’s going to handle that. That’s the most important thing.
“He may have the talent, even the mentor, the coaches, the experienced players but they have to mentor that boy. Wherever he’s out at a mall or in public, people will talk, ‘this one’. How he’s going to take that fame at a young age [is very important].
“They [youngsters] should just stay cool, don’t spend too much time on social media. Social media has killed a lot of players, you can score a beautiful goal, then have one million followers. Now everyone is praising you, and you think you have arrived. Then, after one season, the player just disappears.”
