Pitso Mosimane recalls how Sundowns snatched Thapelo Morena from Chiefs

Pitso Mosimane has recalled how his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns, snatched Thapelo Morena from Kaizer Chiefs.

Morena joined the Brazilians in August 2016 from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic on a five-year contract.

The pacey wing-back has since established himself as one of the key players for Sundowns, having been with the club for eight seasons.

Due to his impressive performances, Morena is now regarded as one of the most decorated players in PSL history. He won seven DStv Premiership titles in a row and a handful of domestic trophies with Sundowns.

The utility player was also part of the Masandawana team that participated in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2017.

Since his arrival at Sundowns, Morena has played in 277 matches, scoring 22 goals and providing 30 assists. Morena’s impressive performances have earned him a regular place in the Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad.

The 30-year-old netted a brace on Tuesday for Bafana, who defeated Zimbabwe 3-1 at the Free State Stadium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

WHAT DID PITSO MOSIMANE SAY ABOUT THAPELO MORENA?

Morena’s rise to prominence has been praised by Pitso Mosimane who signed him at Sundowns. Mosimane says he travelled to Randfontein to convince Morena’s parents to sign with the Tshwane giants.

“I’m happy to see Thapelo Morena gracing the back pages of the newspapers; he’s a very good player,” Mosimane said in an interview on Radio 2000.

“When we signed him at Sundowns, I had to go to Randfontein to convince his parents to sign with us. It was tough because even Kaizer Chiefs wanted him at that time. So I’m glad I played my part.”

In the just-ended campaign, Thapelo Morena played in 27 matches in all competitions, scoring one goal and making one assist for the 2016 CAF Champions League winners.
