Barns on Chiefs rumours & why he signed for Stellenbosch FC

Richards Bay FC outgoing star Sanele Barns has addressed Kaizer Chiefs rumours and explained why he signed for Stellenbosch FC.

The 27-year-old, Barns played his last game for the Natal Rich Boyz on Wednesday when they hammered Baroka FC 4-0 in the final match of the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs.

He played a major role in helping the club retain its DStv premiership before he waved goodbye as he will head down to the Western Cape to join Stellies.

Barns cites Stellenbosch’s recent success and their competitiveness as his reasons for opting to sign for them.

“To be honest, Stellenbosch are playing good football at the moment, no one can deny that,” said Barns.

“So, my decision to go that is because they are competing. I need to make sure that when I go there I’m competing as they do. I think I’m highly motivated to go there.”

Prior to signing with Stellenbosch, Sanele Barns was rumoured to be a target for Kaizer Chiefs. While he admitted to being aware of the reported interest from the Soweto giants, he clarified that they never made a formal offer.

“To be honest there were rumours, but they didn’t put anything on the table,” he explained

In his final game for the KZN side, Barns confessed to a mix of emotions: the joy of contributing to their return to the top-flight league, tinged with the sadness of departure.

MIXED EMOTIONS

“Today when I woke up, I had mixed emotions because I knew it was going to be my last game here at Richards Bay.

“So, I had to be cautious. I had to play very well in order to leave the team in a better place. I think emotionally, I was not okay but I’m glad now, seeing this group, seeing the supporters. I’m very happy,” he added.
