‘He’s a parent’: Salim Magoola on countryman Denis Onyango

Richards Bay FC goalkeeper Salim Magoola has spoken about the significant influence Denis Onyango holds for Ugandan footballers in South Africa.

Magoola arrived in South Africa in 2021 when he joined Pretoria Callies after parting ways with Sudanese giants Al Hilal

He spent only one season with the SA second-tier side before signing for Richards Bay where he has been a reliable presence in goal for the past two seasons.

Magoola recounted how Mamelodi Sundowns’ Denis Onyango provided him with invaluable support during his challenging transition from playing Champions League football with Al Hilal to the South African second tier with Callies.

He praised the 11-time DStv Premiership league winner as a “parent” for his young countrymen playing in SA, applauding his unwavering support.

“Yeah, actually Dennis when I was at Pretoria Callies, he told me you have to show yourself, any team will come and pick you,” said Magoola.

“It was good advice cause I was from a big club, Al Hilal, playing Champions League but now finding myself playing in the second division.

“It wasn’t easy but with Dennis and his motivational speech he told me to say, ‘keep up and don’t stress, after a season you’ll get a better offer’.

“He has been communicating [with me], he’s a parent, a nice person, that’s why we are here fighting for the positions.

“Sometimes, you’re [not playing], he pushes us every time.”

Magoola has been linked with a move away from Richards Bay for next season. As previously reported by FARPost, SuperSport United are ahead on his chase with AmaZulu FC and Chippa United also interested in his services.

Matsatsantsa are in dire need of a new goalkeeper with their number one, Ricardo Goss returning to his parent club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Chilli Boys find themselves in a similar situation with Lloyd Kazapua having departed the club and minimal chance of Stanley Nwabali returning next season.
