Magesi FC in talks to sign out-of-contract Katlego Maphathe

Magesi FC are in talks to sign out-of-contract Cape Town Spurs defender Katlego Maphathe ahead of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

Fresh off their promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Premiership newcomers Magesi FC are buzzing with activity as they gear up for the upcoming season in the top-flight.

The rookies are wasting no time in preparing to take on the country’s elite, and anticipation is high around the club as they embark on this exciting new chapter. This comes after the Limpopo-based side won the NFD league title with two games to spare, beating AmaTuks, who were also vying for automatic promotion.

In their championship run, Magesi won 16 matches in the league, drew nine and lost on five occasions. They collected 57 points in 30 games.

A few days ago, FARPost reported that Magesi have set their sights on the former Kaizer Chiefs defender Sibusiso Mabiliso and Lebogang Mabotja. The latter will leave Sekhukhune United upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2024, while Mabiliso has been a free agent since leaving AmaZulu in January.

Magesi FC Chasing Out-of-Contract Katlego Maphathe

With the transfer window opening next month, Magesi have targeted Katlego Maphathe for the upcoming season.

The wing-back is a free agent after his contract at the relegated Cape Town Spurs expired at the end of the previous campaign.

Maphathe signed a short-term deal with CT Spurs during the 2024 January transfer window after parting ways with Richards Bay FC. In his stint with CT Spurs, Maphathe featured in 13 appearances across all competitions and scored one goal.

“Magesi are looking to build a competitive squad and they are looking to sign Katlego Maphathe,” a source said.

“At the moment, talks between Maphathe, his representatives and Magesi are ongoing, nothing is final at the moment. I mean this is a player who can come and improve the squad. You saw how he was quick to adapt at Spurs, it’s just a pity they couldn’t survive relegation.
