Pitso speaks: Should Teboho Mokoena stay at Sundowns or move abroad?

Teboho Mokoena’s former youth coach, Pitso Mokoena of Harmony Academy, has offered his opinion on whether the highly-rated midfielder should remain at Mamelodi Sundowns or pursue a move abroad.

The box-to-box midfielder joined Sundowns ahead of the 2021/22 season after a successful spell with SuperSport United. Since his arrival, his consistent performances have cemented his place as a regular in the starting line-up, proving to be a valuable asset for Masandawana.

Mokoena’s impact at Sundowns has been undeniable. The 27-year-old has racked up a staggering 92 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with 9 goals and 7 assists.

He’s become a midfield maestro for the Tshwane giants, orchestrating their play and propelling them to an impressive haul of five trophies: three DStv Premiership titles, the Nedbank Cup, and the historic inaugural African Football League crown. Now, he even wears the captain’s armband.

However, Mokoena has been linked with a move away from Chloorkop, with several reports stating that some overseas teams are interested in his services.

Mokoena’s dream move abroad could be on hold. With two years remaining on his contract, Sundowns are eager to extend his stay with a long-term deal. However, negotiations between the player and the club have yet to reach a conclusion, leaving his future uncertain.

In addition, the talented midfielder has also displayed his class in the national team set-up. He was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that won the bronze medal in the 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.

PITSO MOKOENA BACKS TEBOHO MOKOENA TO MAKE A MOVE WHILE AT HIS PEAK

Coach Pitso Mokoena suggests that Sundowns release Mokwena so the player can move to a new challenge abroad while he’s playing at his highest level at his peak.

“Well, I think Teboho [Mokoena] has done it all locally [winning titles],” Pitso Mokoena told FARPost. “I think it’s high time for him to move and go face new challenges somewhere else.

“When are they going to release him? Are we going to wait for the [Mamelodi] Sundowns contract to expire then he can be released? I’m asking.

“Won’t it be late at that time? I’m asking; I’m not sure. For me, whilst he is still at his peak, he should be allowed to go.”
