How Fernando Da Cruz ended at Chiefs after Sekhukhune talks

The incoming Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz held talks with Sekhukhune United before penning a deal at Amakhosi.

The former Lille and AS FAR mentor arrived in South Africa over the weekend to start work at Chiefs.

Babina Noko are on a hunt for a permanent coach to replace Lehlohonolo Seema, who was fired a few weeks ago. Before parting ways with Sekhukhune, Seema was placed on suspension, and assistant coach McDonald Makhubedu took over for the remainder of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

The former Chippa United mentor joined Sekhukhune in the middle of the previous season after leaving Polokwane City FC.

Sekhukhune United finished fourth on the log standings after collecting 45 points in 30 matches in the league.

With the Limpopo-based side competing in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, they are searching for a high-profile coach to lead the club. Sekhukhune made an attempt to bring SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt on board, but the deal could not materialise.

Hunt’s contract was set to expire in June 2024, but the experienced coach has since renewed his contract with Matsatsantsa.

FERNANDO DA CRUZ WAS INTERVIEWED BY SEKHUKHUNE UNITED

Meanwhile, this publication understands that the newly appointed Chiefs assistant coach, Da Cruz, was interviewed by Sekhukhune as a candidate for the vacant coaching job.

A source familiar with the matter revealed that Da Cruz made a strong impression during his presentation to Sekhukhune United.

However, the club gravitated towards Jwaneng Galaxy coach Morena Ramoreboli, who has guided the Botswana side to two group stage appearances in the CAF Champions League.

Ultimately, the Frenchman was swayed over after being selected to assist Nasreddine Nabi, who looks set to take over as head coach at Kaizer Chiefs.

As previously reported by FARPost, Babina Noko have set their sights on Ramoreboli, who guided Galaxy to two successive league titles. He also won the Orange FA Cup with Jwaneng Galaxy in Botswana.

The highly-rated coach has yet to sign a contract extension with Galaxy, and his existing contract is set to expire on June 30, 2024.
