Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season begins: What’s behind the missing faces?

A new era dawned at the Kaizer Chiefs Village on Monday as players met incoming assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz and goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi for the first time, albeit with several missing faces.

The duo’s arrival marks the initial steps in soon-to-be-announced head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s vision for the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Da Cruz, fresh from his arrival on Sunday, wasted no time in outlining Nabi’s expectations for the team. The message was clear: a winning mentality, unwavering discipline and adherence to high standards are non-negotiable.

Goalkeeper coach Mzoughi, known for his energetic approach, reportedly added an infectious enthusiasm to the session. While strength and conditioning coach Muzi Maluleke oversaw the initial fitness tests, Mzoughi’s presence was noted as a positive sign for the goalkeeping department.

WHO WERE THE NOTABLE ABSENCES AND RETURNING FACES?

About 28 Kaizer Chiefs players attended the session, and notable absentees included Siyethemba Sithebe, Njabulo Ngcobo, Keagan Dolly, and Sifiso Hlanti, whose contracts are set to expire at the end of June.

Their absence adds a layer of uncertainty to the squad’s composition for the upcoming season. Ngcobo has already signed with Sekhukhune United.

On the brighter side, legendary goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was present, signalling his continued commitment to the club. He is also out of contract next week. Dillon Sheppard, a familiar face, was on hand to guide the new coaches, easing their transition into the Chiefs environment.

Tebogo Potsane and George Matlou are still recovering from injuries, while Edmilson Dove is away on national duty with Mozambique’s COSAFA Cup team.

Edson Castillo and Jasond Gonzalez were also absent. Gonzalez joined on a one-year deal and indications are that the club will not renew.

With Nabi’s arrival imminent, fans are eagerly expecting to witness a fresh chapter in Chiefs’ storied history.
