Richards Bay FC to part ways with Abel Mabaso

Richards Bay FC and the utility player Abel Mabaso are set to part ways ahead of the 2024/25 season, FARPost has learnt.

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Mabaso has been with the Natal Rich Boyz for two seasons after signing on a free transfer at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign.

His acquisition was intended to boost the team following its promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the DStv Premiership

He saw significant playing time in his first season at the club from the Northern side of the KwaZulu-Natal province. He made 27 appearances and scored once across all competitions.

Last season, however, his involvement dipped. He only featured in 13 matches, starting just four and coming off the bench for the remaining appearances.

Mabaso was no longer part of the club during the final match of the PSL Playoffs that the Vumusimuzi Vilakazi-coached side played against Baroka FC last week.

The 33-year-old midfielder will be looking for a new club elsewhere as the new season approaches.

Apart from Pirates, Mabaso has previously played for Mamelodi Sundowns, Mpumalanga Black Aces [loan spell], Maritzburg United [loan spell], Ajax Cape Town [loan spell] and Chippa United.

OTHER RICHARDS BAY EXITS

The KZN side has already parted ways with the defender Abdi Banda, who spent one season with the club after joining at the beginning of the season from Chippa United.

The Tanzanian defender only made eight appearances in all competitions in the Richards Bay shirt.

The Jomo Biyela-owned side also bid farewell to Sanele Barns last week, with the winger set to join Stellenbosch FC next season after putting pen to paper in the midseason.

Barns has been a mainstay for Bay since his arrival at the club in 2022 when he signed from AmaTuks. He scored 10 goals and registered 11 assists in 62 games that he played for the club over the past two seasons.
