Keenan Phillips spotted at Golden Arrows training

Former Moroka Swallows defender Keenan Phillips was spotted at Golden Arrows training as the club returned for pre-season this week.

Abafana Bes’thende assembled for the first time on Monday to begin preparations for the 2024/25 campaign.

Some squad members face uncertain futures with contracts expiring at the end of this month. However, the whole team reported for training.

While it remains unclear whether he has officially joined the club, Phillips’ appearance hints at a possible move ahead of the start of the season

Phillips’ addition to the team wouldn’t be a surprise. He has previously worked with Arrows head coach Steve Komphela during their stint together at Moroka Swallows in the first half of the season.

The defender was part of the players who were dismissed by the Dube Birds before the beginning of the second round due to the players’ strike over unpaid salaries.

His last game was on 23 December when Swallows drew with Royal AM in the DStv Premiership match.

During his brief spell with the Soweto-based side, he featured in 14 matches, scoring on one occasion across all competitions.

Phillips came through Bidvest Wits youth ranks. His dream to play in the PSL came true in 2020. Gavin Hunt promoted him to the senior at The Students. He went on to make his debut against Kaizer Chiefs. This was when PSL returned to action after a 159-day hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Phillips only made four appearances for the Clever Boys before the club’s status was sold to Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila. He went on to sign for SuperSport United in the same year.

The 24-year-old featured in 54 matches for Matsatsantsa before his move to the Dube Birds.

Whether or not he joins Golden Arrows, Phillips is carrying hopes of establishing himself at the club he’ll be playing for next season after a tumultuous four years of switching clubs.
