George Matlou extends Kaizer Chiefs stay amidst transfer interest
Kaizer Chiefs have extended George Matlou’s stay at the club by another year after exercising its option of an additional season.
Matlou, who joined Chiefs from Moroka Swallows two seasons ago, had attracted interest from Chippa United but will remain at Amakhosi for the upcoming campaign.
His impressive performances for Swallows FC caught the attention of Amakhosi, who signed him in the summer of 2022. He even received a call-up to represent South Africa in a 2022 African Nations Championship qualification match against Comoros.
However, Matlou has faced challenges securing a regular starting spot at Chiefs.
In his two seasons with the club, he has made 25 appearances, contributing one assist. Despite the limited playing time, Chiefs’ decision to extend his contract signals their belief in his potential and the value he brings to the team.
WHICH FOUR PLAYERS ARE NOT STAYING AT KAIZER CHIEFS?
Amakhosi have parted ways with four players as they prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 DStv Premiership season. This decision comes as Chiefs eagerly await the arrival of their new coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who is currently concluding his tenure with Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat.
While Nabi is yet to officially assume the Amakhosi hot seat, the club has already begun making changes, with Fernando Da Cruz and Ilyes Mzoughi joining the technical team as assistant coach and goalkeeper coach, respectively. Majdi Safi also came in as a strength and conditioning coach.
The quartet affected by the shakeup includes notable names like Kegan Dolly, Njabulo Ngcobo, Siyethemba Sithebe and Sifiso Hlanti. This move aims to inject fresh talent and energy into the team, signalling a new era for the club.
All four players were approaching the end of their contracts, which the club has chosen not to renew. Ngcobo has wasted no time securing his future, signing a three-year deal with Sekhukhune United.
Among the released players, Dolly, who joined from Montpellier in 2021/22, leaves as the most impactful, having made 67 appearances, scored 14 goals, and provided 11 assists. The other players, Ngcobo, Hlanti, and Sithebe, had varying degrees of success during their time with the Chiefs.
