CT Spurs retain veteran defender Tshepo Gumede for promotion push
Cape Town Spurs, recently relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, have retained the services of veteran defender Tshepo Gumede for the upcoming season.
Gumede, a former Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates player, joined CT Spurs in the second half of last season under the guidance of coach Ernst Middendorp, with whom he had previously worked at Maritzburg United.
Despite the team’s relegation, Gumede’s experience and leadership proved valuable, prompting the club to offer him a one-year contract extension. The move signifies Spurs’ intent to assemble a competitive squad for their promotion pushback to the DStv Premiership.
Gumede’s career has seen him play for various clubs, including SuperSport United, Platinum Stars, Pirates, Cape Town City, AmaZulu FC and Marumo Gallants. His extensive experience in South African football makes him a significant asset for the Cape Town side as they aim to navigate the challenges of the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

On the other hand, Thato Mokeke’s brief return to Spurs concluded after a short-term contract. The 33-year-old midfielder joined the club following his departure from Cape Town City FC due to a significant injury.
CT Spurs enlisted Mokeke, a veteran with four years of experience at the former Ajax Cape Town, in an attempt to maintain their position in the top division. However, he participated in only seven matches, with the team securing three wins, two draws, and two losses, ultimately finishing 16th in the DStv Premiership.
Mokeke has amassed 250 appearances in the top tier, representing SuperSport United, Chippa United, and the two Cape Town clubs since his debut in 2010.
The club is also reported to have agreed to part ways with Bradley Ralani for the second time this season. Initially released in December, Ralani was brought back to help the team fight against relegation.
However, recent reports indicate a new agreement has been reached for his departure.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC is reportedly prepared to spend big to acquire two promising players from their relegated neighbours.
The club, led by coach Steve Barker, has set its sights on the talented duo of Rushwin Dortley, a 22-year-old defender, and Asenele Velebayi, a 21-year-old winger.
Despite their team’s struggles last season, both players consistently shone on the field, catching the eye of several top-flight clubs. Velebayi, in particular, has garnered interest from two other DStv Premiership teams due to his versatility, speed and scoring ability.
