Arrows complete Keenan Phillips signing, contract length revealed

Keenan Phillips, who was recently spotted at Golden Arrows, has penned a deal with the club, FARPost has learnt.

Earlier this week, this publication reported that the defender was spotted on Monday outside the training fields at Moses Mabhida Stadium where Arrows train.

Abafana Bes’thende kicked off preparations for the upcoming season with the entire team, including head coach Steve Komphela, reporting for training. This comes despite recent rumors linking Komphela with a move away from the club.

Simba SC and Sekhukhune United, both still searching for head coaches ahead of the new season starting in a few weeks, were reportedly interested in the former Kaizer Chiefs coach.

HOW LONG KEENAN PHILLIPS’ STAY AT ARROWS WILL BE?

FARPost understands Phillips put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Durban-based club. He marks the first new arrival for Arrows since the 2023/24 season ended.

The 24-year-old right-back, Phillips, is set to return to action after a stint without a club in the second half of last season.

Former SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits, Phillips was one of the players released by Moroka Swallows following a players’ strike over unpaid salaries.

WHO COULD BE THE NEXT SIGNING FOR ABAFANA BES’THENDE?

Meanwhile, Ugandan goalkeeper Ismail Watenga could be another addition to the squad. The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at the KwaZulu-Natal club but remains contracted to Mamelodi Sundowns.

As previously reported by FARPost a few months ago, Arrows submitted a formal proposal to the Brazilians to sign Watenga permanently. However, the future of the shot-stopper remains to be seen.

Given Sundowns’ foreign quota dilemma and a strong existing goalkeeping department – Ronwen Williams, Reyaad Pieterse, Jody February, and the returning Ricardo Goss, it’s unlikely they’ll retain the former Vipers SC goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear whether the Tshwane giants will extend the stay of Dennis Onyango whose contract is running out this month.
