Onke Moletshe: The mercurial winger Jomo Sono can’t stop praising

Jomo Sono, the legendary SA footballer and coach, is known for his discerning eye for talent.

His protege, Onke Moletshe, who spent the last two seasons at Venda Football Club, is a 24-year-old winger who has Sono singing his praises and calling for his swift ascent to the top tier of South African football.

The 24-year-old has sparked a transfer war between SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United. Moletshe, a former SA Under-20 international, has been making waves with his impressive performances for Venda.

He joined the Motsepe Foundation Championship club two seasons ago. In the 2023/24 season, the dynamic winger contributed two goals and six assists in 16 games. His previous season was equally noteworthy, with ten goal contributions in 20 games [two goals and eight assists].

“Onke Moletshe is a good kid and a good player,” Sono told FARPost. “He should have been playing in the DStv Premiership a long time ago.” Sono’s admiration for Moletshe stems from his exceptional skill set.

“He’s quick, skilful, and has a good football brain,” the South African football legend explains. “He scores goals, unbelievable goals sometimes.” But Moletshe’s talent extends beyond the pitch. Sono also praises his professionalism, discipline, and down-to-earth nature. Moletshe was part of the Jomo Cosmos family since his youth, progressing through the under-15 and under-17 ranks.

Sono believes that Moletshe is ready for the next step in his career and that the Motsepe Foundation Championship is no longer the right platform for him. “In the NFD, it’s okay to be there for one season for a player like him,” Sono states. “But he needs a bigger platform.”

Sono even suggests that Moletshe is deserving of a spot in the Cosafa Cup, a regional tournament showcasing the best talent in Southern Africa.

“He should be playing in that Cosafa Cup,” Sono asserts. “If he moves to a bigger stage, he can be a big player.” The legendary coach’s words carry weight, and his endorsement of Moletshe is a testament to the winger’s potential.
