Pitso Mosimane’s former club in race to sign a ex-Pirates forward

Pitso Mosimane’s former club is among clubs targeting a nomadic former Orlando Pirates forward, FARPost has been informed.

Zambian striker Justin Shonga, who spent last season in the books of Saudi Arabia’s third-tier team Najran FC, is a wanted man since his contract with the Saudi club expired.

Shonga joined the Saudi club in February 2024 after parting ways with Georgian side FC Gagra, where he had spent six months with the club.

He left the Georgian top-flight side after making 16 appearances. And at Najran, the Zambian international had another six-month deal that ended when the 2023/24 season concluded.

While the club is keen to retain his services, it appears he is also listening to other offers, with Pitso Mosimane’s former club in the mix.

Mosimane coached the UAE Pro League side after leading Al Ahli back to the Saudi Pro League, but his stint lasted just four months.

In addition, two clubs from Saudi Arabia’s first division have already inquired about Shonga’s willingness to join them.

One Qatari club has also signalled its intention to sign the former Orlando Pirates marksman for the 2024/25 season.

Chippa United also have Shonga on their wishlist, but it appears his sights are away from the DStv Premiership. Shonga burst onto the South African football scene in 2017 when he joined The Buccaneers.

He went on to make over 70 appearances for them, scoring 16 goals and providing 16 assists. The Zambian international left Pirates at the end of the 2019/20 season after falling out of favour.

He later joined Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila, who had just bought the status of Bidvest Wits. In addition, he also played for Cape Town City FC, Sekhukhune United, and Egyptian side Ismaily SC.
