Michael Morton extends CT Spurs stay despite relegation
Veteran midfielder Michael Morton has extended his stay at Cape Town Spurs despite relegation from the DStv Premiership.
CT Spurs had a campaign to forget last season after they returned to the SA top-flight for the first time in six seasons. However, their stay was short-lived.
The Cape Town outfit struggled for form and consistency in their run. They changed coaches, starting the season with former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs striker Shaun Bartlett. In November 2023, former Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp was brought in to stabilise the situation. However, the team got relegated.
Morton joined the Capetonians in 2022 when the team was still participating in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. This was after parting ways with now-defunct All Stars FC ahead of the 2022/23 season.
MICHAEL MORTON SIGNS A ONE YEAR EXTENSION WITH CAPE TOWN SPURS
On Saturday, 29 June, the 35 year-old announced on his social media platforms that he’s staying at the club after signing for another year.
Morton is one of the players who was facing an uncertain future with the Mother City-based side. His contract was expiring on 30 June.
A month ago, he revealed to FARPost that the negotiations for a new deal have started and a decision will be made soon.
“I’ve got a big announcement to make, 19 years ago I signed my first professional contract with Orlando Pirates Vodacom team Yebo Yes. Fastforward 20 years, I’ve had the most incredible years. I’ve shared the dressing room with some of the SA best footballers,” said Morton.
“I’ve been mentored and guided by the country’s best coaches and played for some of the country iconic clubs. I have experienced a lot this game has to offer, the immense pride of representing SA and wearing SA football jersey.
“The joy of lifting trophies, scoring goals though not many. I’ve experienced the absolute of promotion and devastation of relegation this beautiful game has given me everything, with that being said to let you know it’s time. I’m happy to announce that I’ve signed a one year contract with Cape Town Spurs. Another attempt to put this club where it belongs in the DStv Premiership.”
