Itumeleng Khune’s crossroads: playtime or parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs?

Iconic Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune faces a defining moment in his career as his playing contract expires.

The club has offered Khune a non-playing contract, signalling a shift in their plans for the veteran shot-stopper. However, the former Bafana Bafana number one remains resolute in his desire to continue playing at the highest level.

Sources close to Khune reveal that he is at a crossroads, unwilling to envision himself wearing any jersey other than that of Amakhosi.

“Itumeleng Khune has spent his entire football career, since the age of 12, immersed in the world of Kaizer Chiefs,” a source close to Khune told FARPost. “The idea of wearing another team’s colours, despite his deep desire to continue playing, is a challenging one for him.

“However, the thought of ending his career on someone else’s terms is equally difficult.

“He has been given time to contemplate the club’s offer of a non-playing role. While there haven’t been any concrete offers from other teams, he may need to explore his options if the club won’t allow him to play.

“The arrival of a new goalkeeper coach at Chiefs offers Khune a glimmer of hope for a revitalised career.”

Ilyes Mzoughi arrived last week to take over as goalkeeper’s coach at Naturena. His arrival sparks hope in the 37-year-old goalkeeper, who believes a fresh start could revitalise his career.

Khune’s Instagram posts underscore his conviction, highlighting the longevity of goalkeepers and their ability to improve with age. His suspension for disciplinary reasons earlier in the 2023/24 season further complicates the situation. It raises questions about his standing within the club. Despite this setback, his dedication to his craft and the potential for a resurgence under new leadership leaves room for optimism.

The tension between Khune’s ambitions and the club’s vision creates an impasse, forcing a decision in the coming days. The coming days will be crucial for both Khune and the Soweto giants. A decision that balances the club’s strategic direction with Khune’s desire to continue his illustrious career at Naturena hangs in the balance.

ITUMELENG KHUNE TOLD TO CONSIDER FUTURE LEADERSHIP ROLE WITHIN KAIZER CHIEFS

Sgwili Gumede, a well-known expert in sports sponsorship and branding, believes that staying with Chiefs, even if it means retiring as a player, would be the best move for Khune.

“He’s incredibly popular and well-loved by the fans,” Gumede told SABC Sport. “While there might have been some disagreements in the past year, he’s still held in high regard.”

Gumede advises Khune to consider a future leadership role within the club. “If I were advising him, based on what we know publicly, I’d say, ‘Khune, take the opportunity to work with the club and develop your future leadership career.'”

Gumede suggests roles like joining the technical team, becoming a sporting director, or even moving into marketing. He emphasises the importance of building a post-playing career with a prestigious club like Chiefs.

“Whether as part of the technical team or even in the background, where you could potentially be a future sporting director, or a future marketing manager, or whatever the case may be… But he should start building his [post-playing] career with a giant like Chiefs, and that would stand him in good stead.”
