Cebo Mchunu’s Pirates future to be decided after Spain preseason

Young talent Cebo Mchunu, who joined Orlando Pirates last year after an impressive performance with Bizana FC in the Khabba Cup, is back at the club and will participate in the team’s pre-season trip to Spain.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Pretoria Callies in the Motsepe Foundation Championship to gain experience. He made his professional debut in a draw against Black Leopards and went on to play ten games for the team.

The Soweto giants return to Spain, where they will face Sevilla, the La Liga side, in a friendly match on July 15. But before that, Jose Riveiro’s men will begin their preseason campaign against English Championship side Plymouth Argyle on July 12.

To conclude their tour, Pirates, the reigning champions of the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, will face off against Al Sadd SC, a team from the Qatar Stars League, on July 19th.

The player’s agent, Mike Makaab, confirmed Mchunu’s return to the Bucs. “He is back at Pirates and has started pre-season with the club. He will travel to Spain as the club will go to Spain for pre-season. His future at Pirates will be determined after pre-season,” Makaab told FARPost.

If Mchunu impresses the technical team during pre-season, he will compete for a spot alongside established wingers such as Monnapule Saleng, Deon Hotto and Vincent Pule.

The competition will be fierce, as only a few wingers saw significant playing time last season, with Relebohile Mofokeng, Saleng, and Hotto being the primary contributors.

However, injuries to other players could lead to some positional changes, opening the door for potential opportunities for Mchunu. He will be hoping to earn his spot and play in the DStv Premiership next season.
