Kaizer Chiefs withdraw offer for Nasreddine Nabi’s target Anderson Cruz

Kaizer Chiefs have withdrawn an offer for Angolan wingback Anderson Cruz, a prime target for incoming coach Nasreddine Nabi.

The Petro de Luanda star Cruz had been identified as a replacement for S’fiso Hlanti. Amakhosi decided against extending Hlanti’s contract when it expired at the end of June, and the club has been searching for a replacement.

Cruz and Cameroonian Jonathan Ngwem, who plays for Egyptian side Future FC, were recommended as top targets. The 28-year-old Cruz, whose career has taken him to Spain, Bolivar and France, is available on a free transfer.

The Angolan international was reportedly excited about the prospects of being part of Nabi’s project at Chiefs. However, the club apparently ended their pursuit due to the player’s financial requirements. The former Alavés star could now be headed to North Africa, where he reportedly has other suitors.

On the other hand, there were concerns that Ngwem, at 32 years old, might not be a sustainable long-term investment.

Bongani Sam

Chiefs have since turned their focus to Bongani Sam, who has spent the last couple of seasons on loan. The Soweto giants are in the final stages of negotiation with the defender, following approval from his current club, Orlando Pirates, to discuss personal terms.

In recent seasons, the former Bloemfontein Celtic fullback’s loan spells have taken him to Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows. He signed for the Buccaneers five years ago and has made 29 appearances for the club. At Swallows, the 26-year-old played 25 games and nine at Maritzburg United. According to Transfermkt, he has five career goals and four assists.

Nabi, the expected new head coach of the Kaizer Chiefs, will join the team in Istanbul, Turkey, for their pre-season training camp. Amakhosi jet off to Turkey on Thursday and will spend 18 days preparing for the new season.
