Rulani Mokwena reveals truth behind Sundowns split: ‘I didn’t want to leave’

Rulani Mokwena has revealed the truth behind his split with Mamelodi Sundowns, saying his departure from the club was not of his own volition.

Sundowns on Wednesday announced the coach’s exit saying they had “amicably concluded an agreement” to cut ties. In an interview with Robert Marawa on MSW, Mokwena revealed that his “hand was forced”.

“I didn’t want to leave; I have to make that clear that I didn’t want to leave. My hand was forced,” he said.

This revelation contradicts earlier the club’s statement that Mokwena and Sundowns had mutually agreed to part ways. Mokwena’s statement hints at potential internal conflicts or disagreements that led to his unexpected exit.

“The decision of Mamelodi Sundowns was taken by the Board taking into account the objectives and expectations of the club and was not influenced or based on the recommendation of any individual associated with the club,” read the club’s statement.

Mokwena’s tenure at Sundowns was marked by both success and controversy. While he led the team to several league titles, his relationship with sporting director Flemming Berg was reportedly strained. It remains unclear whether this tension played a role in his departure.
