Elias Mokwana sparks transfer tussle: Chiefs, Sundowns, & Esperance vying for Bafana star
Sekhukhune United forward Elias Mokwana has ignited a fierce bidding war among three prestigious clubs – Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance.
The 24-year-old joined Sekhukhune two seasons ago and has been on a constant rise since then. His exploits saw him earn a place in the senior national team.
‘Kiddeo’ marked his international debut with a goal as Bafana Bafana rallied from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Andorra in the FIFA Series encounter in Annaba, Algeria.
In the season preceding his arrival at Sekhukhune, he spent a year with Platinum City Rovers in the NFD following their promotion in the 2021/2022 season.
Following a solid second-tier season, Mokwana joined Babina Noko ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season. In a breakout 2023/24 season, he contributed four goals and five assists in 35 games for his Limpopo-based club.
INSIDE THE RACE FOR ELIAS MOKWANA’S SIGNATURE?
Mokwana signed a lengthy contract with Babina Noko, and the club is resigned to losing him, given the interest. With three years remaining on his contract, his estimated value runs into millions.
Sundowns and Esperance have reportedly shown interest in acquiring the fast-paced forward’s services. However, with the Brazilians’ upcoming coaching changes, it remains uncertain whether the new coach will be interested in signing him.
On the other hand, Chiefs’ incoming coach, Nasreddine Nabi, is an admirer of the talented winger. The Tunisian has identified Mokwana as a key component in his ambitious rebuilding plans for the Soweto giants.
But Chiefs will have to fend off the competition of Esperance who have already submitted an enticing offer. However, there are signs that the player prefers a move to Naturena, believing that Sundowns’ established squad would limit his opportunities for playing time.
The Tunisian giants see Mokwana as a valuable addition to their squad as they strengthen their attacking options and compete for continental honours. The Tunis-based side lost to Al Ahly in the final of the CAF Champions League last season, having eliminated Sundowns in the semi-finals.
