Junior Mendieta leaves Sundowns for FC Volos in Greece

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Junior Mendieta has surprisingly left the club to join Greek Super League side FC Volos.

The attacking midfielder spent just one season with Masandawana after signing from Stellenbosch FC at the start of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign.

In his first season at Chloorkop, Mendieta featured in 29 appearances across all competitions. He scored two goals and added three assists to his name.

Mendieta was mostly used as a second-half substitute by head coach Rulani Mokwena, who recently parted ways with the club. The Brazilians announced the departure of Mokwena on Wednesday, 03 July 2024, despite leading the club to their seventh successive league title.

Mokwena was also named the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season for the second time in a row since taking over as the sole head coach in 2022.

Meanwhile, Mendieta follows players such as Bongani Zungu, Brian Onyango, Thabiso Kutumela, and Gaston Sirino to the Sundowns exit door.

Zungu was a surprise exit at Downs after forming an important part of the team both in domestic competitions and on the continent. The 31-year-old midfielder made 30 appearances in all competitions and registered three assists under his name.

Despite the Tshwane giants not confirming Mendieta’s departure, FC Volos have unveiled the skilful winger ahead of the new season. Before his official unveiling, Mendieta told a radio station in Greece that he would be leaving Sundowns to join FC Volos.

Mendieta spent five seasons in the SA top-flight and established himself as one of the league’s household names. The Argentine international played 79 matches for Stellenbosch, scoring 15 goals and providing 15 assists.
