Wydad Casablanca courts Rulani Mokwena after Sundowns exit

Wydad Casablanca have reportedly made contact with former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, gauging his interest in taking over the Moroccan club’s vacant coaching position.

The approach comes after Mokwena’s shock departure from Sundowns was confirmed by the club on Wednesday.

Wydad finished the season under an interim coach, having dismissed their head coach, Adel Ramzi. The decision was made after a disappointing run in the CAF Champions League campaign in December.

Wydad Casablanca, a powerhouse in African football, endured a lacklustre previous season, failing to secure continental qualification with a sixth-place finish. The club is eager to regain its competitive edge and views Mokwena as a potential catalyst for change.

Mokwena enjoyed a successful tenure with the Tshwane giants, leading them to numerous domestic titles and deep runs in continental competitions. He beat Wydad in the final of the inaugural African Football League [AFL]. His tactical acumen has earned him widespread acclaim.

While the contact between Wydad and Mokwena is described as exploratory, both parties are reportedly open to further discussions. The Moroccan club is said to be impressed with Mokwena’s track record. They also believes he possesses the qualities needed to elevate the team’s performance.

The potential appointment of Rulani Mokwena would mark a significant coup for Wydad Casablanca. This would also signal their ambition to return to the summit of African football.

RULANI MOKWENA RETURNS TO COACHING ROOTS AT BLACK POISON

Mokwena revealed that he will be temporarily returning to coach his amateur team, Black Poison, in an effort to reignite his passion for football.

He expressed that he has “lost it a little bit” when it comes to his enthusiasm for the sport and coaching. He believes that going back to where his coaching journey began may help him revitalise his love for the game.

“I’m already employed. I will be coaching Black Poison for the next couple of weeks,” Mokwena confirmed. “Hopefully, I can revitalise myself, and I can get the passion for football and coaching because I have lost it a little bit, I must say. Maybe going back to where everything started, maybe that will reignite something.”
