Richards Bay FC part ways with former Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane

Richards Bay FC have parted ways with the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane ahead of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

The Natal Rich Boys recently returned from their off-season break to prepare for the upcoming campaign. The club had a disappointing showing last season, finishing 15th in the log standings.

Richards Bay had to save their top-flight status through the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs, beating AmaTuks and Baroka FC for a spot in the Premiership. In the previous season, Bay registered eight wins in the league, drew six and lost 16 times in 30 matches.

Meanwhile, Mabokgwane struggled for game-time as they fought hard to survive relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The former Bafana Bafana international featured in six appearances across all competitions for Richards Bay. He conceded nine goals and kept two clean sheets.

MABOKGWANE LEFT RICHARDS BAY UPON THE EXPIRY OF HIS CONTRACT

Mabokgwane was a second-choice goalkeeper to Salim Magoola, who has produced impressive performances between the sticks for Bay.

The Ugandan shot-stopper has since renewed his contract with Richards Bay, bringing to an end transfer rumours linking him with SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs.

With the transfer window currently open, the KZN-based side has opted against renewing Mabokgwane’s contract for the new season. His existing contract came to an end on the 30th of June 2024.

“Jackson Mabokgwane is not part of the squad that returned for pre-season this week,” a source told FARPost. “It looks like Mabokgwane is not on the plans of the technical team for next season looking at the number of games he played last season.”

The goalie also played for teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits, Bloemfontein Celtic, Baroka FC, and Black Leopards, Mpumalanga Black Aces, and Platinum Stars.
