Tapuwa Kapini makes sensational return to Sekhukhune United

Former Sekhukhune United captain Tapuwa Kapini has made a sensational return to the club.

The veteran goalkeeper left Babina Noko two years ago and played for Highlands Park in the third-tier league of SA football.

FARPost has since established that the 39-year-old is back at the club, albeit in a different role.
The former Zimbabwe international was part of the team that helped the Limpopo side gain promotion to the top-flight in 2021.

Following a season of limited opportunities in the top division, he sought a new challenge elsewhere.

His move to the club could mark the end of his playing career as he transitions to coaching. He has been brought in to work primarily with the development squad goalkeepers while learning from senior team coach Innocent Mayoyo.

The Harare-born goalie had a professional career spanning 24 years in professional football, having made his debut as a teenager. He made his senior team debut in 2000 for the now-defunct Black Aces in Zimbabwe.

Nicknamed ‘Campos’, he rose to stardom at Bulawayo giants Highlanders Football Club, winning the League title thrice in his homeland before joining the great trek to South Africa.

Silver Stars [later changed to Platinum Stars] was his first home in the PSL before he moved to AmaZulu FC, where he spent five years.

The former Warriors number one went on to feature between the sticks for Highlands Park, AmaZulu, and Sekhukhune since 2006. He has notched up over 250 starts. He conceded 261 goals and kept 59 clean sheets.

Kapini recently told FARPost that he “enjoys being a goalkeeper coach”. “It’s something that I like a lot. Training and grooming these young boys is special to me,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sekhukhune welcomed three new players, including Bafana Bafana international Thabang Monare, who was previously with Orlando Pirates. They also confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Loydt Kazapua and left-back Vuyo Letlapa.
