Sports minister bids farewell to SuperSport star set to jet off to Europe

New Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie has bid farewell to SuperSport United star Shandre Campbell, who is set to jet off to Europe.

The minister took to socials to confirm that the Matsatsantsa starlet will leave South Africa to join Belgian side Club Brugge.

Five days ago, renowned football agent Mike Makaab told this publication the negotiations with the Belgian outfit were still in a premature stage. However, McKenzie has stated that the SuperSport United teenage sensation has signed for Brugge.

“What I can say for now is that it’s too premature at the moment. We are still in discussions with the club,” Makaab told FARPost.

Campbell had a fantastic campaign with SuperSport, as he featured in 30 games across all competitions.

The 18-year-old was promoted to the senior team in July 2023. Campbell made his debut for the Tshwane side when they defeated Richards Bay FC 2-0 in a DStv Premiership tie in August last year at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

According to McKenzie, Campbell will jet off to Europe tonight to start his new chapter of his football career.

GAYTON MCKENZIE ON SHANDRE CAMPBELL’S MOVE TO CLUB BRUGGE

“I came to see off-rising football star Shandre Campbell. He’s been bought by Club Brugge in Belgium from SuperSport United and leaves tonight,” stated McKenzie in a post that he later deleted on X [previously known as Twitter].

“We always focus on our bad stories, but this is just great. Stand up, Reiger Park, and celebrate.”

To prove that Campbell had a successful campaign in SuperSport’s colours, the youngster was nominated for the DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season alongside Orlando Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng and his teammate Ime Okon.

Brugge were not the only team interested in Campbell’s services. He also caught the attention of Dutch team Feyenoord and Danish side FC Midtjylland.
