Jessica Motaung explains why Chiefs settled for Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs’ Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung, has revealed why the club settled for Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi.

On Sunday, Nasreddine Nabi joined Amakhosi in Turkey, where they are having their pre-season camp. They are plotting how to end their nine-season-long PSL title drought.

He takes over from Cavin Johnson, who was let go a week ago. Johnson served as the club’s interim coach after Molefi Ntseki’s firing.

Right now, hopes are high that Chiefs will turn a corner under Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi. They finished 10th in the league last season. Nabi brought in a new technical team consisting of his trusted soldiers. These include Fernando da Cruz and Khalil Ben Youssef, who are his first and second assistant coaches, respectively.

IIyes Mzoughi is the goalkeeper’s coach, while Majdi Safi takes over the strength and conditioning portfolio. Ayman Makroud is the team’s performance analyst.

Chiefs were first linked with Nabi when Arthur Zwane was fired. But talks broke down at the eleventh hour and Ntseki was instead appointed.

The club then reverted back to Nabi, who will now lead them into the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

Jessica Motaung has opened up on why the club settled for the 58-year-old coach, who has previously coached big-name clubs that include Al Hilal, Ismaily, Al Merrokh SC and Young Africans SC. His latest job was at the helm of Morocco’s AS FAR.

“I believe we have done all the work to ensure that we have the right team, the right coach to make sure that we take Chiefs to the next level,” said Jessica Motaing. “And we are looking forward to his work and that of the team he has assembled, new and older players that are with the squad.

“We looked at a number of things; the right coach would have coached around the continent, who understands the Chiefs brand and where we want to go.

“A coach who has the hunger and passion for success and the Chiefs brand. I must say well done to the sporting director [ Kaizer Motaung Jr] and the entire team for the extensive work they did in scouting the world.

“It was not a continental decision, we looked at a number of coaches and the presentations that were made and the thorough analysis in finding the right team of people to work with us.

“It’s not about hitting the ground, but it’s about doing the things right and building continued success. We all want success, but we all know that if you want success, you must do everything properly,” she added.
