Kaizer Chiefs, Yanga clash in Toyota Cup
Kaizer Chiefs are set to host Tanzania’s reigning champions, Young Africans, in the inaugural annual Toyota Cup later this month.
The ‘ground-breaking pre-season Cup’, as Amakhosi describes it, will see the club face off against some of Africa’s top football clubs during the off-season for the next three years as an extension to Chiefs’ current sponsorship agreement with Toyota SA.
Football fans in Bloemfontein are in for a treat as the city gears up to host the first-ever edition of the Toyota Cup. PSL giants Chiefs will take on Tanzanian powerhouse Young SC on Sunday, July 28th, 2024, at 3:00 PM at the Toyota Stadium.
Interestingly, the two teams met last season in a pre-season encounter. Yanga hosted their South African counterparts in Dar es Salaam as they wound up their Week ya Wananchi celebrations with the clash.
This time around, Yanga makes the trip to Bloemfontein as the two clubs look to strengthen relations. The two clubs will use the match to gauge their readiness for the new season.
Young Africans president Hersi Ally Said was present at the launch of the Toyota Cup alongside Chiefs’ marketing director, Jessica Motaung.

“We are excited to be launching this ground-breaking initiative through our partnership with Toyota,” said Jessica Motaung, as Chiefs are currently in Turkey in preparation for the upcoming 2024/25 PSL season under the leadership of Nasreddine Nabi and his technical team.
“The Kaizer Chiefs brand has been successfully built on the Club’s rich history of its contribution to not only South African football, but the ever-growing brand of football on the continent.
“In Yanga, our Club has found brand synergies that align to our objective of enhancing the African football brand, and through the Toyota Cup, we look forward to collectively working together in achieving this.”
Yanga PRESIDENT Promises Competitive Display in Toyota Cup
Building on last year’s friendly exchange, Young Africans SC president Hersi Ally Said expressed his enthusiasm for the invitation to the Toyota Cup and thanked both Toyota and Chiefs.
The Yanga president views the Toyota Cup as a crucial chance to fine-tune their squad. He also believes that the pre-season tournament provides a valuable opportunity to test Yanga’s mettle against top competition.
“As the Young Africans Sports Club, we are very pleased to receive this invitation to participate in the Toyota Cup 2024.,” said Hersi Ally Said.
“This match continues the relationship between our two big teams in Africa, which began last year when we invited Chiefs to participate in our exhibition-friendly match called Wiki Ya Mwananchi. We are delighted by this invitation and promise to deliver a competitive match that will help us prepare for the new season of 2024/25.”
Before the Amakhosi and Yanga tie, The City of Roses will witness a curtain-raiser match featuring legends of Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic, kicking off at 12:30 PM.
This match serves not only as a warm-up for the main event but also as a tribute to the late Ntate Petrus Molemela, Life President of Celtic and a champion of football in Mangaung.
