Football legend Stan Tshabalala has died

DStv Premiership club Orlando Pirates have announced the passing of football legend Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala.

The former Bafana Bafana coach was recently hospitalised after he was shot following a house break at his residence. The 75-year-old was said to be recovering at his home.

But on Thursday evening, the Buccaneers announced the sad passing of Tshabalala.

“The Tshabalala and Orlando Pirates Family is announcing the sad and untimely passing of Stanley Tshabalala this afternoon in hospital,” the club said.

“Bra Stan, as he was affectionately referred to by everybody, succumbed to the injuries he suffered when he was shot in March this year.

“The Tshabalala and Orlando Pirates Family will furnish the details in due course. The public is advised to await the provision of the details for the arrangements going forward.”

Tshabalala is best known for creating the famous “piano and shoe-shine” style while at Mamelodi Sundowns in the 1980s.

He also worked for Pirates rivals Kaizer Chiefs as a chief scout. He was the first Bafana coach when South Africa was re-admitted into international soccer in 1992.

At the time of his passing, Tshabalala was also part of the Orlando Pirates technical team.

His former club, Mamelodi Sundowns, were one of the first clubs to send their condolences.

“The Chairman and the Motsepe Family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC & the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we mourn the loss of Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana Coach, Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala,” reads the statement from Sundowns.

“As the person who introduced the shoe-shine-and-piano brand of football, Screamer’s legacy, life and memory will be celebrated beyond the football fraternity.

“The enormous contribution made by the much loved and jovial Screamer Tshabalala in sport will forever be celebrated.  We pray that the Almighty comforts and strengthens the Tshabalala family, his friends and colleagues.  May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
