Wydad secure Rulani Mokwena as new head coach

Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca have officially announced the appointment of Rulani Mokwena as their new head coach.

The move comes hot on the heels of Mokwena’s departure from South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns. The 37-year-old mentor orchestrated a double triumph in the DStv Premiership and the inaugural African Football League last season.

Interestingly, Sundowns’ victory in the African Football League final came at the expense of Wydad. Rumours of the move intensified last week when Mokwena’s representative was reportedly spotted in Paris, where he is thought to have engaged in discussions with Wydad’s interim president, Hicham Ait Menna.

It now appears those talks bore fruit, with Mokwena agreeing to take the helm as Wydad embarks on a new era following the departure of long-time president Said Naciri.

Mokwena’s decision to join Wydad comes despite interest from other North African clubs, including AS FAR, USM Alger and CR Belouizdad. The allure of the Botola Pro giants, coupled with the ambition of the club’s new leadership, proved irresistible for the Soweto-born tactician.

WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF RULANI MOKWENA’S WYDAD CONTRACT

Mokwena has signed a two-year contract with the three-time African Champions, a testament to Wydad’s faith in his ability to guide them to further domestic and continental glory. The composition of his technical staff is expected to be revealed in the coming days, adding another layer of intrigue to this high-profile appointment.

The move is a significant statement of intent from Wydad, signalling their determination to maintain their position at the pinnacle of African football. For Mokwena, it presents a fresh and exciting challenge as he seeks to replicate his success in South Africa on the grand stage of Moroccan football.

The Casablanca outfit is set to take part in the expanded FIFA World Club Cup. His former club, Sundowns, Tunisia’s Esperance and Egyptian giants Al Ahly complete the list of clubs headed to the World Cup.
